AVELAR has opened its library of circa 1970-to-1990 California building and accessibility standards to share with all interested building and accessibility professionals. Many of the historical records to be released are cited in senior partner Lonnie Haughton’s paper chronicling the “History and Backstories of California’s ‘1985 State Building Code’”
In 1973, State Architect John C. Worsley issued a seminal 18-page manual, “Accessibility Check List and Graphic Illustrations”, establishing foundational principles and guidelines for providing access to public buildings by California’s physically disabled citizens. AVELAR has now released a copy of this historic document. (Our team will next release a comprehensive 247-page compendium, published in 1975, of all accessibility laws – from 1968 onward – that were passed by the Legislature.)
