AVELAR continues to share our library of circa 1970-to-1990 California building and accessibility standards to share with all interested building and accessibility professionals. Many of the historical records to be released are cited in senior partner Lonnie Haughton’s paper chronicling the “History and Backstories of California’s ‘1985 State Building Code’”.
Until the mid-1980s, the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) maintained separate “Minimum Property Standards” for the various types of residential buildings financed by FHA-insured mortgages,
As reported by HUD, these Minimum Property Standards were “intended to provide a sound technical basis for FHA mortgage insurance by providing minimum standards which will assure well planned, safe, and soundly constructed homes. It is also desired that the standards will stimulate the development of new ideas, techniques and materials, resulting in better and more economical housing for American families.”
AVELAR now releases from its library a scanned copy of the 346-page Minimum Property Standards for One and Two Living Units published in 1966 by HUD.
