AVELAR’s Library of Historic ‘Title 24’ Codes; 1981 State Building Code DOWNLOAD

AVELAR has opened its library of circa 1970-to-1990 California building and accessibility standards to share with all interested building and accessibility professionals. Many of the historical records to be released are cited in senior partner Lonnie Haughton’s paper chronicling the “History and Backstories of California’s ‘1985 State Building Code’

As described by Mr. Haughton, the 396-page ‘1981 State Building Code’ (adopted by the State Building Standards Commission on September 15, 1981) contained statewide building and accessibility standards that amended sections of the model 1979 Uniform Building Code. The scope and extent of this initial set of standards were expanded in the separate 460-page ‘1984 Annual Supplement to the State Building Code’.

These two code books were then compiled into the 756-page ‘1985 State Building Code’, which continued to amend provisions of the model 1979 UBC (except for a new set of regulations published by the Department of Housing and Community Development that instead amended provisions of the model 1982 Uniform Building Code).

AVELAR is releasing a high-quality scanned copy of California’s initial 1981 State Building Code from its library. (Our team’s next release will be a copy of the 1984 Annual Supplement to the State Building Code.)
