AVELAR continues to share our library of circa 1970-to-1990 California building and accessibility standards to share with all interested building and accessibility professionals. Many of the historical records to be released are cited in senior partner Lonnie Haughton’s paper chronicling the “History and Backstories of California’s ‘1985 State Building Code’”.
On July 26, 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act in front of 3,000 people on the White House lawn.President Bush’s emphatic directive on that day — “Let the shameful walls of exclusion finally come tumbling down” — neatly encapsulated the ADA’s message: that 43 million Americans with disabilities are full-fledged citizens and as such are entitled to legal protections that ensure them equal opportunity and access to the mainstream of American life.
AVELAR now releases from its library a scanned copy of the 721-page Americans with Disabilities Handbook published in December 1991 by theU.S. Equal Opportunity Employment Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice.
