February 2025 Employee Spotlight: Stephen Thalin
At AVELAR, we take pride in highlighting the talented professionals who make our team exceptional. This month, we shine the spotlight on Stephen Thalin, one of our dedicated Structural Engineers.
Stephen graduated in 2011 from Cal Poly State University where he also wrestled on the Division I collegiate team. His strong academic foundation and rigorous athletic training has played a significant role in shaping his expertise and approach to structural engineering.
He is now a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of California and holds a Cal/OSHA Competent Person Certification for Trench and Excavation Safety. As a key member of our Structural Engineering Department, he is responsible for evaluating and investigating structural systems in buildings, from the roof to the foundation. To ensure the integrity and safety of the structures we work on, his typical day at work includes analyzing, calculating, sketching, investigating, mediating, innovating, collaborating, joking with coworkers, tapping a drumbeat on any available surface, and constant snacking.
Beyond his professional achievements, Stephen is a proud father of three and a devoted husband. When he’s not solving complex engineering challenges, you can find him spending quality time with family and friends, mountain biking, surfing, playing drums, lifting weights, reading comic books, or making delicious homemade noodles.
Our Structural Engineering Department is growing rapidly, tackling increasingly complex projects and expanding our capabilities to meet the needs of our clients. Stephen plays a crucial role in this dynamic team, contributing his knowledge and skills to help drive our department forward.
