At AVELAR, we believe that understanding the past is key to shaping the future of building and accessibility standards. We are opening our archives and sharing electronic copies of historical California State building codes to support industry professionals. Our collection spans from the 1970s to the 1990s, offering valuable insight into the evolution of regulations that continue to influence today’s standards.
Many of these historical records are referenced in senior partner Lonnie Haughton’s research paper, History and Backstories of California’s ‘1985 State Building Code‘. As part of this effort, we are pleased to release a scanned copy of the 1985 State Electrical Code, published on October 1, 1985. This edition was the first to incorporate California’s new disabled access regulations, integrating relevant provisions into Title 24, Part 3 of the California Code of Regulations.
By making these documents accessible, we aim to support architects, engineers, and accessibility professionals in their work while preserving the rich history of California’s building standards.
